Readings in the Parish Missal - Parish Missal pp 55 & 1006

First Reading Isaiah 42: 1-4.6-7
Here the prophet invites all to the rich banquet of life God provides for his people. In baptism we share in the life of God.

Second Reading 1 John 5:1-9
Faith in Jesus leads us to love one another and gives us the ability to overcome evil. Jesus; baptism and death bear witness to his identity.

Gospel Mark 1: 7-11
This tells us how Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist in the river Jordan and the signs that accompanied his baptism.

Sunday 11th January 2009

The Baptism of Jesus.

You are my Son, the beloved, my favour rests on you.” Those wonderful words, spoken to Jesus on the occasion of his Baptism in the Jordan, are spoken to each one of us because of our baptism into him. Just listen to God speak those words from his heart into your heart now: “you are my daughter, my son, the beloved, my favour rests on you.” Our major task is to live out that love of God in our vocation. For you as a couple committed in love, make your life together full of the joy of God’s love. Single people, religious, priests, live out the same vocation of love in different ways but for the same purpose, to fill the world with the presence and the love of God. As a community of faith, the parish is a gathering of all these vocations so that, working with one another, we can radiate that same love to all those around us.

Fr. Johnny Doherty, C.Ss.R.

WEEK OF PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY

18 - 25 JANUARY 2009

The observance of the 'Church Unity Octave' was initiated by Rev. Paul Wattson, an Episcopal priest, and took place at Our Lady of the Angels chapel, Graymoor, Garrison, N.Y. in 1908. It was developed by Abbe Paul Couturier in 1935 as the 'Universal Week of Prayer for Christian Unity'. This year's theme was chosen by the churches in Korea. The biblical text for this Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is taken from Ezekiel 37:17 "Join them together into one stick, so that they may become one in your hand".

A service to mark the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity will take place in the Church of the Immacualte Concepion on Sunday 18 January at 5.00pm. Everyone is welcome.

PRAYER CORNER

THE NEW YEAR
Ever Faithful God
in this new year I pray:

to live deeply with purpose,
to live freely, with detachment,
to live wisely, with humility,
to live justly with compassion,
to live lovingly with fidelity,
to live mindfully with awareness,
to live gratefully with generosity,
to live fully, with enthusiasm.

Help me to hold this vision
and to daily renew it in my heart,
becoming ever more one with you,
my truest Self.

I ARISE IN THE NEW YEAR

I arise with amazement at the presence of the Holy One.
I arise with gratitude for life.
I arise with hope that all shall be well.
I arise with courage to meet what will be difficult.
I arise with conviction to do what is life-giving.
I arise with eyes ever alert for beauty.
I arise with openness to greater truth.
I arise with desire for continued transformation.
I arise with compassion for the hurting ones in the cosmos.
I arise with grief still settled in my spirit.
I arise with a sense of kinship with all whom I love.
I arise with determination to make good choices in using my time.
I arise with willingness to help those who will need my care.
I arise with hesitation as I think about the pain that may come.
I arise with longing for ever greater inner freedom.
I arise with happiness, knowing that I am invited to live life more fully.
I arise with love for the Holy One, my Intimate Companion.

Compassionate God and faithful Friend, thank you for the opportunity to walk into another year of life. Help me to be faithful, to be generous, to be yours.

PRAYER

The purpose of all prayer is to uplift the words,
to return them to their source above.
The world was created
by the downward flow of letters:
The task of man is to form those letters into words
and take them back to God.
If you come to know this duel process,
your prayer may be joined
to the constant flow of Creation -
word to word, voice to voice,
breath to breath, thought to thought.
The words fly upward and come to Him.
As God turns to look at the ascending word,
life flows through all the worlds
and prayer receives its answer.
All this happens in an instant
and all this happens continually;
Time has no meaning in the sight of God.
The divine spring is ever-flowing;
one who is ready can make himself into a channel
to receive the waters from above.
