Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

First Reading :
Nehemiah 8: 2-6.8-10

After Jesus returned from exile in Babylon, Ezra sought to re-establish the Jewish religion. Here, he reads the book of the law of Moses to the people.

Second Reading:
Corinthians 12: 12-30

Just as the human body is one though made up of many parts, so the Church, though composed of different members with different gifts, form a unity in Christ.

Gospel: Luke 1: 1-4; 4: 14-21
Gods’ promises are fulfilled in Jesus, the long awaited Saviour of the poor and oppressed.

Sunday 24th January 2010

Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

Jesus read from the scroll: ‘He has sent me to bring the good news to the poor, to proclaim liberty to captives, and to the blind new sight, to set the downtrodden free, to proclaim the Lord’s year of favour’. Then he said: ‘this text is being fulfilled today, even as you listen’. This is surely the clearest statement about the purpose of the Church and of our part in it that could be made. We don’t just have a faith that is for us to make us comfortable. We have a power to transform the world we live in and living our faith is about doing just that. Our homes are to be places where each person finds healing and affirmation. The same has to be made true of the faith community we belong to. It is time to move away from a sense of duty in regard to our faith and move into a sense of adventure for the Kingdom of God.

Fr. Johnny Doherty, C.Ss.R.

RESTING IN GOD

Only in

God be at

rest, my

soul. . .

PSALM 62:2

Some writers on meditation encourage their readers to "rest in God." Doing nothing in prayer except resting in God sounds extremely satisfying and comfortable, kind of like pulling up a beach chair by the side of a lovely lake or ocean and taking it easy. Probably most of us would like nothing more than to do this when we pray. The thought of resting like this is enticing. Then why is it so difficult? Why do we find it challenging to just "be" with the One who claims our heart? What causes us to squirm around when we have nothing to do but be present?

We forget about preparation. There are actions to take before we get to the comfy beach chair - cancelling appointments, packing some food and drink, driving to the beach, getting a parking place, setting up our chair, and putting on sunscreen. In the same way, coming to a place of rest in God takes preparation - setting aside a definite time each day, finding a relatively quiet place, resisting answering the phone, and setting aside the big list of "have to do" items. After this is done, we then breathe a sigh of relief, entrust our life to God and enjoy the wonderful "rest" without thinking we have to have something to show for our efforts after our time with the Holy One is completed.

Help me to rest in you, my Beloved.

Joyce Rupp.

PRAYER CORNER

A PRAYER FOR PATIENCE
God, teach me to be patient -
Teach me to go slow -
Teach me how to "wait on You"
When my way I do not know. . .
Teach me forbearance
When things do not go right
So I remain unruffled
When others grow "uptight". . .
Teach me how to quiet
My racing, rising heart
So I may hear the answer
You are trying to impart. . .
Teach me to let go, dear God,
And pray undisturbed until
My heart is filled with inner peace
And I learn to know Your will!
