Day of Prayer for Vocations

Jesus said: “The sheep that belong to me listen to my voice”. One of the big questions of today for people is: “Who am I?” and there are all kinds of self-awareness courses around to help us answer that question. It is an important question and many of these courses are helpful. But it is not the most important question for us. Much more important is the question: “To whom do I belong?”. Belonging is of the essence of being human and our belonging is identified by and lived out through the voices that we listen to. Some people listen to the voice of the world around which tells us to put ourselves first and they belong to the world. Others listen to the voice of Christ telling us to put others first and by so doing they belong to him. In the struggle between the two, Christ invites us to listen to his voice.

Fr. Johnny Doherty, C.Ss.R.

Prayer for Vocations

Heavenly Father,
Bless our diocese with the grace of many vocations to the priesthood and religious life.
Through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, grant those You have called the willingness and generosity of spirit to give themselves
in devoting their lives and their talents to the service of our Lord and to His Church.
Increase the faith of everyone in our diocese, and particularly the Faith
of those You have called and will continue to call.
We ask this through Christ, our Lord.
Amen.

A SPIRITUALITY OF GLADNESS

Easter is a season of joy. Why is it that problems, troubles, and worries usually get centre stage in the spiritual life? Why is joy a neglected part of prayer? Most of us surely do enough complaining and beseeching of God when things don't go our way. How can we balance our requests and wants with thanksgiving and joy? One way I've found to nurture a spirituality of gladness is by remembrance. Each day before closing my eyes for sleep, I look back over the day that is ending. No matter how troublesome the day has been, I recover my joy by asking: "What is one thing in this day for which I can be glad?"

There is always something that can bring joy. Maybe I managed to get through the day without any physical or emotional discomfort. Maybe it was a kind word, a comforting thought, a little hug, or an unexpected bird winging by. Sometimes I discover in remembrance that I missed the day's happy moments because I was overly focused on just one thing that didn't go as I planned or because someone did not meet my expectations.

I hope that I never let a day go by without glimpsing a touch of joy in it and crying out to God with gladness.

Risen Christ, may the joyfulness of this Easter season find a home in my heart.

Joyce Rupp.

PRAYER CORNER

PRAYER FOR THE CHURCH IN IRELAND
God of our fathers,
renew us in the faith which is our life and salvation,
the hope which promises forgiveness and interior renewal, the charity which purifies and opens our hearts to love you, each of our brothers and sisters.

Lord Jesus Christ,
may the Church in Ireland renew her age-old commitment to the education of our young people in the way of truth and goodness,
holiness and generous service to society.

Holy Spirit, comforter, advocate and guide,
inspire a new springtime of holiness and apostolic zeal for the Church in Ireland.

May our sorrow and our tears,
our sincere effort to redress past wrongs,
and our firm purpose of amendment
bear an abundant harvest of grace
for the deepening of the faith
in our families, parishes, schools and communities,
for the spiritual progress of Irish society,
and the growth of charity, justice, joy and peace
within the whole human family.
