DOES SUFFERING BRING OUT THE
BEST OR THE WORST IN YOU?
In a disaster, as some people heroically rush to
the scene to assist those who are in need, others
use the chaotic situation to loot stores and homes.
These kinds of opposite human responses are the source
of the common expression, "Disaster brings out
the best and the worst in people." And what is
true for large calamities seems true for minor, personal
ones. When confronted with sickness, or some physical
or emotional suffering, some remain cheerful as they
silently tackle their afflictions. Others react to
their suffering by being irritable, grouchy, surly
and impatient. We can now rephrase the saying about
the two responses to a disaster, "Sickness brings
out the best and the worst in people!"
Ageless wisdom tested by time shouldn't be contested,
yet is that old adage really true that tribulations
bring out the best or the worst in you? The answer
it seems is that they only bring out what is really
in you! If you are striving to live as happily as
you can, regardless of what fate drops at your door,
you can greet it with confident optimism because you
believe that whatever it is can be resolved in a beneficial
way. An outburst of violent anger at some minor misfortune
is but the bubbling up to the surface of a hidden
spring of inner joyfulness. Living a cheerful life,
then, is but the result of abiding as consciously
as is possible within the hidden inner presence of
the divine mystery. So the next time you are visited
by some unexpected fortune, let your response be for
you an indicator signal of your care for your abiding
divine guest, or your neglect of that guest. If you
respond in anger or in despair, let it be an alarm
to awaken you to your negligent hospitality to your
guest.
I first came across the image of "the Guest"
for the divine presence in the writings of the fifteenth-century
Hindu spiritual master Kabir. In his love poems/psalms
he was fond of referring to the divine presence as,
"The Guest." In one of them he says, "Hope
to find the Guest while you are alive, leap into that
experience. . . that you call 'salvation' belongs
only to those who are living." In that same one,
Kabir concludes with wisdom about being overly attentive
to the methods of meditation and spiritual practices:
"When you are earnestly searching for the Guest,
it is passionate love and intensity of your longing
for the Guest that actually accomplishes the work."
In another he says, "The Guest is inside you,
and also within me; just as a sprout is hidden inside
a seed. . . the arrogance of reason has severed us
from that love. . . let your arrogance go, and look
inside. I love the Guest that is inside of me."
Edward Hays, "Chasing
Joy".

PRAYER CORNER
LOVE POEM TO GOD
God speaks to each of us as he makes
us,
then walks with us silently out of the night.
These are the words we dimly hear:
You, sent out beyond your recall,
go to the limits of your longing.
Embody me.
Flare up like flame
and make big shadows I can move in.
Let everything happen to you: beauty
and terror.
Just keep going. No feeling is final.
Don't let yourself lose me.
Nearby is the country they call life.
You will know it by its seriousness.
Give me your hand.
