2nd Sunday of Lent

Peter said to Jesus: “Master, it is wonderful for us to be here”. As we gather for Mass this Sunday, how many of us can say those words of Peter from our hearts? And yet we have a right to be able to say them. Unfortunately for so many Catholics, Mass has become a burden rather than a joy and a source of enthusiasm and energy. We need to help each other to gain that grace. And as we return home from Mass this Sunday, how many of us can say those words of Peter in relation to our family life? At best, so many can only say it is not bad, it is ok. But can we say it is wonderful? And yet we have a right to be able to say that. It takes a lot of working at the relationships in our home, the relationships of marriage, of family, of neighbourliness, to make those words possible and to ring true. But it is in those two places that the practice of faith takes place.

Fr. Johnny Doherty, C.Ss.R.

A BETTER WAY

Jesus says to us, 'Love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you.' Love your enemies! We find it hard enough to love our friends, so how can we be expected to love our enemies?

Jesus is telling us to love, not hate. Hatred is a very destructive thing. When we hate we expend more energy than is any other emotion. We mustn't dissipate our strength in hating but save it for better things.

This is why Jesus urges us not to have hatred in our hearts for anyone, not even our enemies. It is not only for the sake of the enemy that he says to us, 'Love your enemies', but for our own sake too. Hatred may not destroy its object, but it will surely destroy the one who hates. 'Ten enemies cannot hurt a person as much as he hurts himself' (Proverb).

Jesus never said that we would have no enemies – there is no lack of realism here. But he offers us a new way of dealing with our enemies, a different way of responding that has the potential to break the endless cycle of retaliation that now threatens us all with ultimate violence.

Jesus' way is not an easy way, but it is a better way. He challenges us to respond to darkness with light. The escalation of evil can be stopped only by one who humbly absorbs it, without passing it on. Revenge and retaliation only add darkness to darkness.

Our hearts were made to love, not to hate. Love is more beautiful than hate. Hate poisons the heart, but love purifies it. At all costs, then, we must keep love in our heart. The image of God is at its best and brightest in us when we love.

If we pray for our enemies, peace will come to us. And when we love our enemies, we can be certain that divine grace dwells in us.

PRAYER CORNER

REFLECTION FOR PARENTS/GUARDIANS

Lent is not an obligation,
it is a choice, and it is an
opportunity.
It is a choice
because Jesus himself
invites us to it.
It is a difficult choice to live with,
marked by the Cross.
It is a choice to give ourselves
to deep reflection.
It is also an opportunity to seize:
Lent offers us a time
to confirm our decision
and to strengthen it.
It carries us to life.
Lent opens with a radical choice
but it gives us a share in the life
of Resurrection.
Our Lenten walk expresses our
will to live.
