Sunday 22nd June 2008

There are many things in life which may cause us to become discouraged and to lose heart. Pain and suffering, failures in relationships, frustrated ambition, broken dreams. St Paul in one of his letters describes us as ‘earthenware jars’ which nevertheless hold a great treasure. We may be fragile, easily hurt and all too conscious of our weakness and failings. But within each of us is the treasure of an eternal spirit, created and nurtured by the power and grace of God. To Him we are infinitely valued and loved. He calls us to put our trust in Him so that we may have hope even in the most difficult and painful moments of life. Treasured by Him we will fulfill our destiny to overcome the challenges of this life and be united in joy with Him for ever.

May you find Peace in hours
of quiet resting

Comfort and Love in the gentle
arms of Jesus

And know his Joy today and
always

CHILD PROTECTION

The Diocese of Derry values and encourages the participation of children and young people in the parish liturgies and in activities that enhance their spiritual, physical, emotional and social development. We recognise and uphold the dignity and rights of all these individuals within our 'faith family' and we are committed to their protection and support in a way that promotes their human dignity and integrity as 'children of God'. In keeping with this ethos, we undertake to do all in our power in the Diocese of Derry to create safe environments for children, young people and vulnerable adults and to ensure their protection from physical, sexual and emotional abuse.
We acknowledge that all involved in working with children, young people and vulnerable adults have a special duty of care towards them, and we undertake to put in place policies and procedures through which this care is put into effect so that their rights as active participants in the life of the Church are upheld. The Derry Diocesan Child Protection Committee was appointed by the Diocesan Bishop. The Committee works independently, developing, directing and managing all aspects of policy, development, training and support for parishes within the diocesan Church.

Each parish has been asked by the Child Protection Committee to nominate two representatives who will help them develop an awareness of 'best practice' issues in working with children and young people in Church settings. Our representatives for Camus parish are Mrs Nuala Kerr and Mr Anthony Mc Garrigle from Hillmount Grove. They are assisting in the parish to draw up a policy statement and a code of basic procedures, as well as ensuring that contact information for child protection personnel is made known within the parish. An audit will be carried out annually of the child protection policies and procedures in each parish and how they are being developed and implemented.

To ensure the well -being and protection of children, young people and vulnerable adults, all personnel involved in ministry with the groups in the diocese will be subject to strict vetting procedures. (POCVA - Protection of Children and Vulnerable Adults (N.I.) Order 2004). This will happen in our parish in the weeks to come. This vetting process is for all who work with children, whether as employees of the parish or as volunteers. Child safe-guarding is part of our Christian calling. Examples of roles requiring to be vetted to comply with Protection of Children and Vulnerable Adults (N.I).Order 2003:- Bishops and Congregation Leaders, all clergy (diocesan and religious), candidates for priesthood and religious life, Eucharistic Ministers, parish secretaries, clergy housekeepers, caretakers, sacristans, all adults living in parochial houses and other church property, leaders of music ministry, choirs, parent and toddler group organisers, transport volunteers, home or hospital visitors, pilgrimage organisers. This is not an exhaustive list - it merely indicates the scope of the vetting procedure process.

In our parish in around two month's time our parish representatives Nuala and Anthony will address a public meeting at which all those involved with children in our parish will be asked to attend. More information on the details of the vetting procedures will be available at that time. In our parish many people work together to safe-guard children taking part in church activities. Our parish representatives for Child Protection are key to this. Along with all who work with children in the parish community, best practice in child-safeguarding is our goal.

SINCERE THANKS TO EVERYONE

I would like to give a heartfelt thanks to all those who marked my recent 'Big Event'. I am extremely grateful for the numerous cards and gestures of kindness in many different ways that I received. I had hoped that it would have slipped by without any notice but the parishioners and friends of the parish had other ideas and I was pleasantly taken aback by the level of attention and interest shown. For all of this I am humbly grateful. They say that nowadays sixty is the new thirty and that brings me consolation!!!!

With renewed thanks and appreciation.

PRAYER CORNER

*************************

LIBERATOR LORD

To those whose lives are bitter, the poor and dispossessed,
your word is one of justice, a balance redressed,
the riches of creation, a commonwealth possessed.
May your Spirit be upon us, our Liberator Lord.

To those who live in bondage of body and mind,
who are prisoners of ignorance or the hatred of their kind,
your word is one of liberty, the captive to unbind.
May your Spirit be upon us, our Liberator Lord.

To those whose eyes are blinded, who will or dare not see,
your word is calling softly - come face reality
and in it the dear truth, your lives will precious be.
May your Spirit be upon us, Liberator Lord.

To those who know the anguish of love that cannot flower,
whose race or class or gender define another's power,
your work is one of freedom to grow and not to cower.
May your Spirit be upon us, our Liberator Lord.

You have spoken through the prophets and saints of history,
through the sobbing of the voiceless and the groans of the unfree,
and your voice is still proclaiming, 'Now you must speak for me.'
May your Spirit be upon us, Liberator Lord.
