Pentecost Sunday

Jesus said to his disciples: "Peace be with you. As the Father sent me, so am I sending you." Then he breathed on them and said: "Receive the Holy Spirit." As we celebrate Pentecost in our homes and our parish communities, there are two qualities we need to develop - peace and energy. Peace is Christ's desire for us as we journey with him and with one another. But peace is not a passive thing. Rather it is a dynamic way of life. We are to be his witnesses in the world, and so he gives us his Holy Spirit so that we can have the energy we need in order to witness through love. This love is practised and developed in marriage and family life. It needs to be extended to the life of the parish community. Our motto for this week of Pentecost can be: "Love as if everything depends on you. Live as if everything depends on God."

Fr. Johnny Doherty, C.Ss.R.

A PRAYER FOR PENTECOST

Spirit! Power and Passion of my being,
press upon my heart your profound love.
Move through the fragments of my days;
enable me to sense your fiery Presence
consecrating my most insignificant moments.

Spirit! Source of Vision, Perceptive Guide,
permeate the moments of my choices
when falsehood and truth both call to me.
Turn me toward the way of goodness,
so that I will always lean toward your love.

Spirit! Blessing for the heart grown weary,
encircle me with your loving energy,
empower me with your active gentleness.
Deepen within me a faith in your dynamism
which strengthens the weak and the tired.

Spirit! Breath of Life, Touch of Mystery,
you are the ribbon of inner connection,
uniting me with the groaning of all creation.
Because of you, my life gathers into a oneness.
Keep me attentive to this interdependence.
Fill my being with a constant compassion
and a deep hope that knows no bounds.

Spirit! Dwelling Place, Sanctuary of Silence,
you are the home for which I deeply yearn.
You are the resting place for which I long.
I find both comfort and challenge in you.
Grant that I may keep my whole self open
to the transforming power of your indwelling,
that I may ever know the blessing
of your tremendous companionship.

CAR PARKING IN CHURCH GROUNDS

At a recent meeting with the Parish Pastoral Council concern was raised about the volume of cars parked in the church grounds. It has been decided that after the weekend of 20/21 June only those vehicles carrying the sick, invalid or immobile will be allowed into the church grounds. This is necessary because the paving around the church is being damaged by the number of cars passing through. We would also ask that taxis stay at a respectable distance from the main door so as not to obstruct parishioners on their way into and out of the church entrance. The car park at Barrack Street Boys' school will be open for parking and the full extent of the avenue including the front of the parochial house is fully available. We will mention this over the next few weeks to allow people to be fully informed.

PRAYER CORNER

PSALM FOR PRAYING

Hear my cry, O Merciful One,
listen to my prayer;
From the depths of my being
I call to You,
for my heart is faint.

Lead me to the Rock that is
my strength,
for You alone are my refuge,
your steadfast love conquers
my fears.

Let me dwell in your Heart forever!
Oh, to be safe under the shelter
of your wings!
For with mercy, You have heard my
prayers,
You have shown me the heritage
of those who know your love.

Commit my ways to my birthright, that
I might be a co-creator through
all generations!
As I walk on your path forever,
fill me with abiding love
and understanding!

I shall sing praises and blessings
to your Name, as
I abandon myself into your Heart
day by day!

HOLY SPIRIT, RENEW US!

Come, Holy Spirit,
Renew us with your gifts!
Heal our brokenness
Wash our guilt away;
Pour down your wisdom,
Guide us when we stray.
Instill your peace within us,
Watch over us in need,
Move our hearts to goodness,
Inspire our every deed.
Amen.

COME, HOLY SPIRIT

Come, Holy Spirit,
Help me to replace the busyness of my life with a simpler lifestyle,
so I will focus on the "deeper things" in life and allow time for others.

Nourish my yearnings to understand and to appreciate myself;
keep me from being too self-orientated and unmindful of others' needs.

Fill me with trust in your consoling presence.
Calm me when I am anxious and troubled about many things.
Help me to have the courage to empty myself of everything that does not contribute to the transformation of this world.

Continue to create a deep hunger for you within me.
Feed me with the "finest wheat" of your joy, peace and love.
Often replenish my weary spirit with an enthusiasm and energy
that comes from surrendering my life to you.

Be my wisdom as I search for meaning in a world
fraught with pain, suffering, hostility, and division.
Keep me hungry for you, Source of Life,
so that I will always ache and yearn a bit for you.

INTERCESSIONS

Spirit of light, let the fire of your wisdom burn brightly within us.
Spirit of silence, in the still moment may we be open to God's presence.
Spirit of courage, dispel the fear that lingers in our hearts.
Spirit of fire, engulf us with the passion of Christ's love.
Spirit of peace, help us to be attentive to God's word in the world.
Spirit of joy, enthuse us to proclaim aloud the Good News.
Spirit of love, compel us to open ourselves to the needs of others.
Spirit of power, bestow the gift of your strength upon us.
Spirit of truth, guide us to walk in the way of Christ.
